The Supercritical Pile GRB Model : The Prompt to Afterglow Evolution
نویسندگان
چکیده
The " Supercritical Pile " is a very economical GRB model that provides for the efficient conversion of the energy stored in the protons of a Relativistic Blast Wave (RBW) into radiation and at the same time produces-in the prompt GRB phase, even in the absence of any particle acceleration-a spectral peak at energy ∼ 1 MeV. We extend this model to include the evolution of the RBW Lorentz factor Γ and thus follow its spectral and temporal features into the early GRB afterglow stage. One of the novel features of the present treatment is the inclusion of the feedback of the GRB produced radiation on the evolution of Γ with radius. This feedback and the presence of kinematic and dynamic thresholds in the model are sources of potentially very rich time evolution which we have began to explore. In particular, one can this way obtain afterglow light curves with steep decays followed by the more conventional flatter afterglow slopes, while at the same time preserving the desirable features of the model, i.e. the well defined relativistic electron source and radiative processes that produce the proper peak in the νF ν spectra. In this note we present the results of a specific set of parameters of this model with emphasis on the multiwavelength prompt emission and transition to the early afterglow.

We present the general notions and observational consequences of the “Supercritical Pile” GRB model; the fundamental feature of this model is a detailed process for the conversion of the energy stored in relativistic protons in the GRB Relativistic Blast Waves (RBW) into relativistic electrons and then into radiation. The conversion is effected through the p γ → p ee reaction, whose kinematic t...

We present the spectral and temporal radiative signatures expected within the " Supercritical Pile " model of Gamma Ray Bursts (GRB). This model is motivated by the need for a process that provides the dissipation necessary in GRB and presents a well defined scheme for converting the energy stored in the relativistic protons of the Relativistic Blast Waves (RBW) associated with GRB into radiati...

We report observation results of the prompt X– and γ–ray emission from GRB 000528. This event was detected with the Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor and one of the two Wide Field Cameras aboard the BeppoSAX satellite. The GRB was promptly followed on with the BeppoSAX Narrow Field Instruments and with ground optical and radio telescopes. The X–ray afterglow source was identified, but no optical or radio...
متن کاملThe “Supercritical Pile” Model of GRB: Thresholds, Polarization, Time Lags
The essence of the “Supercritical Pile” model is a process for converting the energy stored in the relativistic protons of a Relativistic Blast Wave (RBW) of Lorentz factor Γ into electron – positron pairs of similar Lorentz factor, while at the same time emitting most of the GRB luminosity at an energy Ep ≃ 1 MeV. This is achieved by scattering the synchrotron radiation emitted by the RBW in a...

The standard afterglow model neglects the presence of the GRB prompt radiation ahead of the blast wave. In fact, the blast wave is dramatically influenced by the leading gamma-ray front which preaccelerates the ambient medium and loads it with electron-positron pairs. The front sweeps the medium outward with a high Lorentz factor and results in a spectacular effect: the GRB ejecta moves freely ...
